Matajiwa Buddha Eyes made of Albesia wood, turquoise with mosaic, 50 × 20 cm
The Matajiwa Buddha Eyes in radiant turquoise combine serenity with vibrant expression. The hand-carved Albesia wood is adorned with fine mirror mosaics that capture and reflect light – like sparkling thoughts in a calm mind. The slightly cracked surface evokes water and sky, conveying a sense of expansiveness. Despite its compact dimensions of 50 × 20 cm, the wall object exudes an impressive presence that is meditative and clear.
Matajiwa stands for "Eye of the Soul" – a name that underscores the deeper meaning of this artwork. The closed eyes invite inner reflection and give the space a harmonious depth.
The Wisdom Eyes of the Buddha – Meaning and Symbolism
In Buddhist art, the Buddha eyes symbolize comprehensive perception – past, present, and future simultaneously. At many stupas, such as the famous Swayambhunath in Nepal, they gaze in all four directions and represent the all-seeing, compassionate wisdom of the Buddha.
Between the eyes, there is often a curved symbol resembling a question mark. It represents the unity of all things and the path to enlightenment through understanding. While the outer eyes represent material wisdom and perception of the world, the third eye in the center symbolizes insight into a deeper truth – the Dhamma.
Matajiwa, the "Eye of the Soul", reminds us of this interplay of inner vision, clarity, and wisdom. This object is more than decoration: it represents the journey from ignorance to the light of understanding. The closed eyes invite us to look inward, find stillness, and let go of external distractions. They remind us: Those who truly wish to see the world, close their eyes.
The Art of Wood Carving
Every line of this Buddha eyes artwork is carefully carved from lightweight, fine-pored Albesia wood. The wood is ideal for detailed carvings, as it is soft enough for precise cuts while maintaining its shape. The white-washed surface is created through several manual steps – a combination of glazing and fine sanding that gives the relief depth and creates a bright, almost floating effect. This meditative artwork is produced in small family businesses where carving is not just a craft but a living tradition.

Dealer Note
Kayon Artisan
Sari, a small but energetic entrepreneur from near Ubud, runs her shop right in the city center. Her range includes numerous handcrafted objects made from Albesia and MDF wood – affordable yet of high quality. We have again purchased some Buddha artworks that have proven to be bestsellers. The term "Buddha shoulder" is rather colloquial, as it actually refers to the head of the Buddha, but since the shoulders are also visible, this name has become established.
When Sari recognized us again, she spontaneously gave us an immediate discount – a great gesture! However, the journey there is often a test of patience with about 5 kilometers in dense traffic from Ubud.
Handmade Note
Each piece of the Matajiwa Buddha Eyes is completely handmade. The use of natural materials and traditional carving techniques leads to small differences in shape and color – an authentic feature of true Balinese craftsmanship.
