Matajiwa Buddha Eyes made of Albesia wood in Red-Gold with Mosaic, 60 × 20 cm
This particularly expressive version of the Matajiwa Buddha Eyes impresses with its vibrant red color, harmoniously complemented by golden ornaments and flame-like decorations on the sides. The 60 × 20 cm wall relief acts like a silent meditation in motion: The colors seem to flow, while the closed eyes maintain a calm, powerful presence. It is a symbol for the inward gaze – intense and radiant at the same time.
Made from lightweight Albesia wood, this material provides ideal conditions for fine carving details. The red-gold color scheme is carefully applied in several layers by hand. The side, wing-like shapes are individually crafted and come together to form a harmonious whole. Embedded mirror mosaics catch the light and reflect it in a multifaceted way, giving the object a vibrant aura. Each of these Matajiwa Buddha Eyes representations radiates a strong spiritual energy.
The combination of red Albesia wood, golden embellishments, and sparkling mosaics stands for masterful craftsmanship and profound symbolism. Matajiwa – the "Eye of the Soul" – receives an almost fiery clarity here and is perfect for spaces that wish to radiate both energy and tranquility.
With dimensions of approximately 60 × 20 cm, this larger variant offers an impressive presence while remaining elegant and balanced. Ideally placed above a sideboard, in a yoga room, or anywhere you want to make a conscious, powerful statement.
The Meaning of the Buddha Wisdom Eyes
In Buddhist tradition, the eyes of the Buddha symbolize an all-encompassing perception that overlooks the past, present, and future. Known from stupas like Swayambhunath in Nepal, these eyes gaze in all four cardinal directions and represent the compassionate and all-knowing wisdom of the Buddha.
Between the eyes is often a curved symbol, similar to a question mark, that symbolizes the unity of all things and represents the path to enlightenment through knowledge. The outer eyes represent the material seeing of the world, while the inner, third eye recognizes the deeper truth beyond the visible – the Dhamma.
Matajiwa, the "Eye of the Soul", reminds us of this connection between inner seeing, clarity, and insight. This wall object is much more than decoration: it represents the path from ignorance to the light of wisdom. The closed eyes invite calm, inner reflection, and the release of external distractions. They remind us: True insight is gained when one closes the eyes.
Traditional Wood Carving – Art and Craft
Every line of this Buddha Eyes relief is crafted with great care from lightweight, fine-pored Albesia wood. The wood allows for precise carving and maintains its shape stability. The surface is hand-glazed and gently sanded in several steps to create depth and give the relief a bright, almost floating effect. The contemplative form is created in small family workshops where the art of carving is a living tradition.

Kayon Artisan
Sari, a dedicated artist from near Ubud, creates these works with careful craftsmanship. Her studio is located in the heart of the city and is known for a variety of Albesia and MDF art objects. The Matajiwa Buddha Eyes are among her bestsellers – although they are actually called "Buddha Shoulders" because they depict the head and shoulders of the Buddha.
Sari generously offered us a discount during our last visit, making the collaboration particularly pleasant – despite the challenges of often congested traffic around Ubud.
Handmade Note
Each Matajiwa Buddha Eyes artwork is created entirely by hand. Due to the combination of carved wood, detailed painting, and mosaic embellishments, color and texture variations may occur, making each piece a unique one-of-a-kind – a true testament to Balinese craftsmanship.
